Founded in November of 1996, Austin Hispanic Writers is primarily a critique group for Latino
writers of prose and poetry. Our members are as diverse in background as is the Austin Latino
population. Most hold daytime jobs, while pursuing writing as a hobby or eventual career.
Over the decades many terms have evolved that label us as a group or as ethnically unique individuals:
Mexican American, Mexican-American, Chicano/a, Latino/a, Hispanic, and the list still grows. Although
some of us may prefer one term over another, in our hearts we are still bonded by the seeds planted
long ago and far away by our ancestors searching for the right soil to plant their roots. Centuries later,
we continue the search for that place we long to call "home." Evidence of this ongoing effort can be found
in the samples of work of members of Austin Hispanic Writers.
At our website you will visit the worlds of bilingual/bicultural individuals who straddle two worlds
daily in an effort to create their own unique reality. We go by many names other than those given by
birthright; and even that name can cause distress, as we often change our birthnames many
times in our lives, prior to settling for one that embraces all the jagged parts of our mirrored
selves.
